Well, I ended up downloading and installing Windows Installer 3.1 on this test computer with fresh install.
I disabled the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing service on both the WSUS server and windows client, which effectively turned off the Windows firewall.
I did this, b/c Group Policy has the firewall turned on.
Once I did this, my test client found updates and downloaded just fine.
This tells me that Windows firewall is blocking something, which I imagine is the path back to the server (

There are hundreds of results on Google with many pointing to Technet but I still can't get this issue resolved.In our last tutorial we installed WSUS and we joined a new Windows 10 laptop to our server but we found that this laptop shows up in the WSUS manager as a Vista client and not as the expected Windows 10.We have to update a table in the WSUS database and correct our GPO with a new WMI filter that will work with Windows 10.Try downloading and manually installing on a machine and see if that machine starts getting updates from WSUS.If it does, you'll at least know where the problem lies.As before, I am able to browse back to the server via UNC path, and run the .
